Program and Mission

”There is more reason in your body than in your best wisdom”
Friedrich Nietzsche

The experience of emotion is a body-felt experience in which every subtle internal or external movement reflects a feeling or idea. Dance/movement therapy enables a person to become aware of and to experience non-verbally what they are seeking to comprehend and express verbally. The body-felt experience focuses on the consciousness of the body/mind connection.

“There is language in her eye, her cheek, her lips! Nay, her foot speaks. Her wanton spirit looks out at every joint and motive of her body.”
William Shakespeare

A session is structured so that there is an awareness of the body in motion --- of even the most subtle physical responses and connections. Gestures, postures and movement externalize the internal state. Emotions, images and ideas that reflect our internal state emerge into consciousness and can then be spoken of and named.

At the depth of every person is soul wisdom. The essence of our wisdom can be accessed through words, movement, music, art, drama and poetry. These verbal and non-verbal resources can allow and open to the experience of Core Self. My work is to assist in unburdening the obstacles that interfere with fulfillment of goals, longings and wishes and to remove the blocks that keep one from a deeper connection to self and to others.

“To live is to feel ourselves fatally obliged to exercise our liberty, to decide what we are going to be in the world. Not for a single moment is our activity of decision allowed to rest. Even when in desperation we abandon ourselves to whatever may happen, we have decided not to decide.”
Jose Ortega Y Gasset

“Give up all the other worlds except the one to which you belong.”
David Whyte

Life is an amazing gift and it is our responsibility to be happy. This requires active engagement with self. That another person can make us happy or is responsible for our well-being is a fantasy. To take responsibility for our self requires on-going courage, humility and focus. To be fulfilled and to heal from early and recent injuries takes steadfast work. Many choices and possibilities open when we come from our truth.

“...and there was a new voice/ which you slowly/recognized as your own,/ and / the only thing that kept you company/ as you strode deeper and deeper/into the world,/determined to do/ the only thing you could do--/determined to save/ the only life you could save”
Mary Oliver

The state of our bodies can positively or negatively affect our emotional state. We utilize non-verbal and verbal means to uncover issues and to move forward to work with them and through them. Clients use dance, movement, drama, art, music, meditation and words to work through these issues and deepen the experience and fulfillment of self.
